Why Your Singapore Business Is Invisible on Xiaohongshu (2025-2026)

If you've been posting consistently on Xiaohongshu since 2023 and your engagement suddenly tanked in late 2024, you're not alone. Hundreds of overseas businesses โ€” from Singapore clinics to Bangkok resorts to Hong Kong e-commerce brands โ€” watched their views plummet from thousands to dozens in a matter of weeks.

This wasn't random. Xiaohongshu's algorithm shifted dramatically in the fourth quarter of 2024, and it's getting increasingly hostile to overseas business accounts. Here's what happened, why it matters, and what you can do about it.

The Algorithm Shift: What Changed

In October 2024, Xiaohongshu deployed a new recommendation system that prioritizes domestic content from domestic creators. The platform's stated goal is to reduce clutter and show users content they're most likely to engage with. The unspoken reality: overseas businesses are being deprioritized.

The shift manifested in three ways:

  • Lower starting reach โ€” New posts from overseas accounts now enter the algorithm with significantly lower initial distribution. Instead of reaching 2,000-5,000 accounts in the first 4 hours, overseas posts might reach 200-500.
  • Content type filtering โ€” Posts tagged as business/commercial (even if educational) are weighted differently. Carousel posts and product-focused content rank lower than before.
  • Account-level suppression โ€” Accounts registered outside Mainland China with mainland-facing descriptions are flagged as "overseas business" and placed in a separate algorithmic tier entirely.

The reality: If your clinic, e-commerce store, or service brand is registered in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, or Hong Kong, Xiaohongshu's algorithm is working against you by default. You're not shadowbanned โ€” you're just ranked below domestic content.

Why This Is Happening (And Why It'll Probably Get Worse)

Xiaohongshu's parent company, ByteDance, is facing three pressures that explain the shift:

Regulatory pressure: The Chinese government has been tightening oversight of cross-border commerce on social platforms. Allowing overseas brands free rein on the platform invites scrutiny. By deprioritizing overseas business content, Xiaohongshu reduces government friction.

Platform quality concerns: Overseas accounts have historically higher churn rates โ€” brands post for 3 months, get discouraged, and disappear. This hurts the platform's content stability and advertiser trust. Algorithmic suppression reduces the influx of low-commitment overseas content.

Domestic advertiser protection: Xiaohongshu's most reliable revenue source is domestic advertisers. Competing against organic overseas content reduces their ad effectiveness and willingness to pay premium rates. Algorithmic suppression drives overseas brands toward paid advertising.

The Ban Wave: What Triggered Account Suspensions

Starting in January 2025, Xiaohongshu launched a compliance sweep targeting overseas accounts. Thousands of accounts were temporarily or permanently suspended. The trigger:

  • Use of VPNs or IP masking to appear domestic
  • Posting content with English text mixed with Chinese
  • Linking to overseas payment systems (Stripe, PayPal, etc.) in bios
  • Posting before/after comparison content (especially medical or beauty-related)
  • Mentioning pricing, packages, or promotional offers in post captions
  • Overly polished, professional-looking content (platform flags this as "ad-like")

The suspensions weren't random punishment โ€” they were algorithmic enforcement of content moderation standards that disproportionately affect overseas business accounts.

Three Strategies to Reclaim Visibility

1. Localize Your Keyword Strategy (Not Just Translation)

English translations don't work on Xiaohongshu anymore. You need Chinese-native keyword research that understands how mainland users actually search.

  • Stop using generic terms like "ๅŒป็พŽ" (medical aesthetics). Use location-specific keywords: "ๆ–ฐๅŠ ๅก็šฎ่‚ค็ฎก็†", "ๆ–ฐๅŠ ๏ฟฝๅก็ฅ›็—˜", etc.
  • Research hashtags with 50K-500K posts, not millions. Less competition, higher ranking odds.
  • Use long-tail keywords matching "problem โ†’ solution" intent. Example: "ๆฟ€ๅ…‰่„ฑๆฏ›ๅŽ็šฎ่‚คๅนฒ็‡ฅๆ€ŽไนˆๅŠž" instead of just "ๆฟ€ๅ…‰่„ฑๆฏ›".
  • Include location modifiers: ๆ–ฐๅŠ ๅก (Singapore), ไธœๅ—ไบš (Southeast Asia), or city names if applicable.

The goal: Rank for keywords that mainland users actually search for, but with geographic specificity that reduces direct competition from domestic clinics.

2. Rebuild Content Compliance (Or Risk Permanent Suppression)

If your account was flagged, you need to rebuild trust with the algorithm. This means:

  • Remove all before/after comparison photos. Even if they're borderline compliant, Xiaohongshu's auto-flagging system will reduce their reach. Switch to "after" photos only, or use illustration/infographics instead.
  • Never mention pricing, packages, or promotional codes in post text. If you must include commercial information, hide it in the first comment (which gets less algorithmic scrutiny).
  • Avoid professional photography. High-quality product shots and studio lighting trigger commercial content filters. Use behind-the-scenes, phone-shot, or community-style photography instead.
  • Mix in non-promotional content. For every 3 educational or lifestyle posts, you can post 1 soft-promotional piece. Adjust the ratio if your account has a compliance history.

3. Understand the New Domestic-First Algorithm

Even with perfect content, you need to work with the algorithm, not against it:

  • Post timing matters more. Xiaohongshu now releases algo updates in batches: 6-9 AM mainland time, 12-2 PM, 6-8 PM. Post at these windows to catch algorithmic distribution windows.
  • Engagement velocity is weighted heavily. Your first 4 hours of engagement (saves, comments, shares) determines if the algorithm pushes your post wider. Focus on generating early engagement: ask questions, create call-to-action hooks, reply to every comment within 30 minutes.
  • Domestic engagement signals matter more than overseas views. If you have followers in Singapore visiting your post, that's less valuable than mainland engagement. This is baked into the algorithm now.
  • Account history affects initial reach. If your account has been suppressed before, even compliant new posts start with lower distribution. Rebuilding visibility takes 4-8 weeks of consistent posting.

The hard truth: Overseas businesses can succeed on Xiaohongshu, but not with the same casual posting strategy that worked in 2023. You need intent, compliance knowledge, and algorithmic precision.

What This Means for Your 2026 Strategy

Xiaohongshu is no longer a free-reach platform for overseas brands. It's becoming a competitive, algorithm-first channel where success requires:

  • Dedicated content research and compliance auditing
  • Native Chinese copywriting (not translation)
  • Content that balances education, entertainment, and soft commerce
  • Paid advertising to supplement organic reach (your budget will be 2-3x higher than domestic brands for same reach)

The good news: Compliant overseas businesses still drive real results. We've seen Singapore aesthetic clinics, beauty e-commerce brands, and wellness coaches build engaged, high-intent audiences on XHS despite the algorithmic headwinds. The difference is strategy, not luck.

If you're currently suppressed or struggling to get traction, it's not your content quality โ€” it's the algorithm treating you as an overseas account. Once you understand the rules, you can work around them.

Next Steps

Start with a content compliance audit. Review your last 10 posts and ask: Would I get suspended for this content today? Remove any before/after comparisons, pricing mentions, or overly polished product shots. Then rebuild with native keyword research and the algorithmic timing strategies above.

Rebuilding from zero takes time. But if you have a real Singapore audience that wants your product, Xiaohongshu will reward you for the investment.
